Eugenie Grandet Honore de Balzac 9781469946160 Books
An idealistic, good-hearted young woman has her spirit crushed by the avarice of those around her. Probably a bit heavy for most modern readers, but worth taking the time savor a classic. Balzac interjects quite a bit of humor into his characterizations of the miserly father and the people that surround him hoping to benefit from his wealth. I actually enjoyed the rather lengthy descriptions of how Pere Grandet accumulates his fortune, although some readers may find it tedious. Ultimately, the farce that it is the miser's life ends up creating only sadness for the two people that are closest to him. Unfortunately, moral of the story, indeed, of life, cannot penetrate the old man's unfeeling heart.Product details

Great book!! Highly recommended. Not giving away anything here but the begining is very descriptive of the time and setting; it is because of this detailed description we are able to characterize the persons in their true nature. It ends just as any french book/movie would but.. leaves a deep impression in you of the human character and strong heart prevailing over the harsh realities of life..
This is by far my favorite novel. I really like how the author takes a lot of time to describe each character and mostly Eugenie's father who is a former cooper who has become wealthy through both business ventures and inheritance.
This is a new Balzac to me, pretty early in THE HUMAN COMEDY, and I loved it. Also loved the ebook, which was pretty much typo-free and nicely formatted. Hard to think of a better deal, and one more powerful argument for owning a .
The book was written long time. But like any classics it’s timeless
This version of one of Balzac's greatest works is problem free, just like its price. Without a fee, one can enjoy a story that reveals much about the power of the parent, and how one's roots and role model are powerful influences on one's life. Do parents pass on both their strengths and weaknesses to their offspring? Well, it would seem they certainly attempt to, and the results can be tragic, as most parents do their damage unwittingly.
This is a fine read with much to teach us. Would that all of my education and entertainment came at the price of this version!
I guess you either are a Balzac fan or not. For those that are, you have read this, for those that aren't or possibly a Balzac fan wannabe, this should be on your list somewhere, maybe even second behind Father Goriot. This is the 3rd time I've read this book. One doesn't read Balzac for the story one reads him for the wisdom and insights into human nature. His observations are sometimes pure genius rarely found in other places.
I found my old copy of Eugenie Grandet from my 1957 French class at Midwestern U. I wasn't able to read the French novel back then, but I spent three years in France in the '60's and tried to read some works in that language from time to time since, with varying results. On a whim, I took this English ebook translation and my old text and finally enjoyed the story, almost reading it in French, even. Eugenie Grandet is a well-told story (Heck, every review of Balzak tells you to expect that). Now that I can understand the story and sometimes even enjoy the subtleties of the French words the author selected when I could recognize his talent that way. I recommend the book and the parallel reading in two languages for anyone who is not very learned in the language of the target.
